Planning Application Submitted for Repair and Conversion of Rectory Barn

Historic Rectory Barn to be Converted to Community Space

The Parish of St Martin has recently submitted a planning application for the repair and restoration of the Rectory Barn. The Grade 3 listed former agricultural building dating from the late C18/early C19 is in urgent need of repair and the Parish wishes to sensitively convert the building so as to provide a flexible space, which can accommodate a variety of community related activities. This will be supplemented by an outdoor garden area.

The conversion will respect the character and historic significance of the building whilst still providing a distinctive and modern space to serve current community needs. By adopting a heritage regeneration approach it is hoped that this project will also demonstrate how historic buildings can be given new life without undermining their historic value and sense of place.

Should the Parish successfully secure planning consent it will launch a fund raising appeal in the Spring to cover the project costs. Estimated costs are likely to be in the region of £750,000 to £1m. Anyone interested in supporting the project are invited to contact the Connétable in the first instance.

The Connétable stated:

In recent years we have worked hard to establish a range of community facilities within the very heart of our Parish. This latest project will further build upon this endeavour, as the sympathetic restoration of this historic granite barn will provide a flexible space which can be used for a variety of community events as diverse as Lectures, Exhibitions, Yoga and Pilates, Men in Sheds, Crafting, Repair Workshops, Amenity Society Meetings plus many other uses.

Adjacent to the Barn on the northside is a small parcel of land which is currently redundant. It is envisaged that this land will be turned into a beautiful, peaceful, landscaped and low maintenance garden complete with a path, herb boxes, a small orchard and seating areas to view the wonderful views of St. Martin countryside and the coast of France in the distance.
