St Catherine’s Bay – Advance Notice of Changes to Mooring Layouts
Following a Navigational Risk Assessment for St Catherine’s Bay, Ports of Jersey will be introducing a number of measures to improve safety, awareness, and the overall predictability of how the bay is used, particularly during the busy summer months.
As part of this, a swim platform and recommended swim area will be introduced on a pilot basis. These measures are designed to reduce the risk of interaction between swimmers and vessels and support safer shared use of the bay.
To enable this, the layout of the mooring field will need to be adjusted. This will involve the relocation of a number of moorings, including those that are currently positioned within or close to the navigable fairway or within the proposed recommended swim area.
Relocation is necessary to:
- Ensure the fairway remains clear, accessible, and predictable for vessels
- Prevent moored vessels from encroaching into the navigational channel
- Maintain good visibility for all users, particularly around the slipway
- Provide sufficient space for the use of the swim platform
Ports of Jersey has a responsibility to manage the harbour safely under the Harbours (Administration) (Jersey) Law 1961 and associated Regulations, including making proportionate changes where required to support safe navigation and shared use.
These changes form part of a pilot scheme, which will be monitored throughout the 2026 summer season, with feedback from mooring holders and other users informing any future adjustments.
At this stage, Ports of Jersey is providing advance notice. They will be in contact with mooring holders directly with details of new mooring positions and the timing of any required relocation.
