Gorey Pier – Visual Preference Survey
The Parish of St Martin has started a community-led project to draw up clear, locally supported patterns of preferred designs (sometimes known as a ‘design code’) to better steward Gorey Pier’s future.
On the 3rd March over 100 residents came to the Public Hall to share their views through questionnaires and visual preference surveys.
Informed by that survey, we are now also sharing questions online.
Design codes are a collection of design principles which help residents define what good development and high-quality public streets and spaces look like in their area. A code sets out what is expected in a clear and visual manner. This can lead to more beautiful and sustainable places which local residents are more likely to support and treasure. With listed buildings, codes can also improve clarity between homeowners and authorities on what is required to secure consent.
The Parish intends to draw up a locally supported design code which establishes clear preferences and guidance for street design and changes to buildings on the Pier, and to give clear and locally supported guidance to Ports of Jersey and to Planning, Parish, Highways and other officers.
In addition to helping co-ordinate a better design approach across different public bodies, this might in time lead to a local ‘conservation area’ and to a wider code for Gorey. It could also lead to a targeted series of design interventions to improve Gorey Pier which much reflect Gorey Pier’s role as a home, as a working pier for boats and as a much-loved place to visit.
As this is a community-led project, we are asking those that live, work, use and enjoy Gorey Pier to share their thoughts and preferences for what features and materials should be included in the design code.
