Update on Gorey Pier Inspection and Stabilisation Works

Ports of Jersey have advised that subject to planning permission, they intend to start site mobilisation on Tuesday 27 May 2025. The work will involve opening a series of trial pits and bore holes on the pier arm, pier head and base of the wall on the harbour side.

The methodology will vary between locations, but excavation will typically be to a maximum depth of 4.5m, or less when rock is encountered. As the bedrock profile varies across the footprint of the pier, some parts of the structure (like the pier head) are formed on the seabed.

The work will take 4-6 weeks to complete. The challenges of working in a tidal zone mean Ports of Jersey will need to schedule digs at low tide to reduce the risk of sea water filling the holes through the pier. A pump may be needed to pump water through a filter basket into the harbour.

During the work, samples will be taken, and plate load tests will be carried out to determine the bearing capacity of the material in the pier. The material removed will be back-filled in reverse order of excavation, and each site repaired as discreetly as possible.

There will be intermittent access restrictions for vehicles, parking bays and the public, depending on which area is being worked on. Ports of Jersey will try to minimise disruption and keep you informed of restrictions as the work continues.

Ports of Jersey have expressed their thanks for your cooperation during the works. They consider the works to be essential to help them understand what needs to be done to secure the historic pier.
