Storm Austen Update 21.10.2026

Jersey Met is forecasting very strong winds on Thursday evening, continuing through Friday, with heavy rain at times, due to Storm Austen.

It is expected a Channel Island Red Wind Warning will be issued in the early hours of Thursday, 24 hours ahead of the start of the strongest winds expected early on Friday.

Taking into account the detailed weather picture and the time of day that the strongest winds are forecast on Friday morning, islanders are being advised to avoid outdoor activity where possible, due to the forecast.

Although Storm Austen is not predicted to be as severe as Storms Ciarán or Goretti, it is likely that there will be disruption to travel as well as potential damage to trees affecting travel routes, and a risk of localised flooding.

Based on this information, a decision has been taken by the Minister for Education and Lifelong Learning that all Government of Jersey schools will close on Friday. Schools are aware of this and will be communicating with parents. This decision has been made as early as possible to give families time to organise childcare arrangements.

Winds will increase from Thursday evening and overnight reaching a peak on Friday morning, remaining very strong and gusty throughout the day.
On Friday morning, winds are forecast to reach Gale Force 8 to Severe Gale Force 9 with gusts of 70 to 80 mph with a gradual decrease during the afternoon.

Jersey Met would like to reassure Islanders that the weather situation is being closely monitored. Further updates and information will follow.
